The Lancashire Heeler is a small breed of dog. It is alert, friendly, and a pleasant companion. Standing 10 to 12 inches at the withers and weighing only 6 to 13 pounds, this dog has a lot of energy. It is a strong dog with great strength and instincts, making it a great rat dog or herder. Its life expectancy is 12 to 13 years. The coat is smooth with an undercoat which keeps the dog dry in all weathers.It may have a slight mane round the neck in winter. The dog is usually black and tan, but liver and tan is now recognised by the Kennel Club. Bitches are preferably about 10ins (25cms) high, the dogs being slightly larger up to a maximum of 12ins (30cms). The Lancashire Heeler is still listed by the Kennel Club as a vulnerable breed.
