This butterfly feeds solely on living corals and is extremely difficult to keep in captivity. The clue to this is its short nose. The rule of thumb here regarding the length of the nose of a butterfly fish certainly applies here. Butterfly fish with short noses are more likely to feed on living corals and butterfly fish with long noses are more likely to feed on small isopods and copepods.

The Melon Butterfly is one of a more beautifully colored butterfly fish in the world. Unfortunately the beautiful coloration of the Melon Butterfly leads to its continued importation for the pet trade. It is advised not to attempt to keep this butterfly fish in captivity unless you have a great deal of expertise.
