Plain, honest conformation The stud in Grosseto produced this distinctive type of horse for light draft work or heavy saddle. The Maremmanas are solid, very steady, enduring, versatile, good-natured, and have a willing temperament. The Maremmana are ridden by the butteri of the Roman countryside to work the cattle. They are not exceptionally fast or have the best shoulders, but have a natural ability to work with the cattle. These horses are strong, resilient, inexpensive to feed, and good for light farm work.

History

The Maremmana, also known as the Maremma, originated on the west coast of Italy in the northern province of Maremma in Tuscany. The exact ancestry of the breed is unclear, but it is probably based on Spanish, Barb, and Arabian stock. Towards the end of the 19th century the Maremmanas were crossed with the Norfolk Roadsters. The Maremmana were used as troop horses by both the cavalry and the police.
