They are black, with a red pseudo-neon strip down the middle of their body, which is where they get their name. A male Black Neon Tetra will be a little smaller than a female. Health

The Black Neon Tetra, or Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi, is a good hardy fish. It doesn't need much attention, other than observation and feeding. They need water with a temperature from 74 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, they like slightly acid to neutral water, with a pH between 5.6 and 7.5. Black Neon Tetras will eat flake food, but should also be given live foods, such as glass worms, blood worms, and brine shrimp from time to time. Breeding Black Neon Tetras aren't very easy to breed. It can be difficult to distinguish the two sexes, but females tend to be larger. Having a pH level of six will encourage the Black Neon Tetras to breed, as well as giving them live food. They will scatter their eggs.

"After these matters we ought perhaps next to discuss pleasure. For it is thought to be most intimately connected with our human nature, which is the reason why in educating the young we steer them by the rudders of pleasure and pain; it is thought, too, that to enjoy the things we ought and to hate the things we ought has the greatest bearing on virtue of character. For these things extend right through life, with a weight and power of their own in respect both to virtue and to the happy life, since men choose what is pleasant and avoid what is painful; and such things, it will be thought, we should least of all omit to discuss, especially since they admit of much dispute." -- Aristotle. Nicomachean Ethics. (X.1172a17). c. 325 BC.
