Another thing to consider, at least as far as zombies go in this discussion, would be your definition of the term and the ideas your readers are bringing with them. I've seen some pretty neat post-apocalyptic prompts on Pinterest with zombies, one of which having the idea that zombies are like travelling ecosystems and they bloom flowers. That isn't a horror idea so much as an example to show that zombies can be a lot of different things.
