Part of this is caused by societal norms, sad as that may be, but I believe a large portion of it is caused by being ‘faceless’. It is extremely easy to be rude or short with someone you don’t know and can be especially true for someone you can’t even see. In this highly digital age we are all essentially the person behind the curtain. Some choose to take this as an easy excuse to be rude or cutthroat. But you also see the same thing happening in daily interactions, especially in the service industry where customers see themselves as above an employee just trying to do their job. Just because someone is a patron of a business does not mean they are above an employee that is on the clock. I can understand the frustration of trying to buy something and it not being in stock, but that shouldn’t give you the right to belittle or mistreat someone that is just trying to do a job.
