Probably one of the most noted local writers is V.S. Naipaul, but there are many others. Local literature is widely used in secondary education. I could be wrong, but I think that there are programs trying to bring some of those languages back. Something more accessible might be Duolingo. It's not great as far as learning grammar or language rules, but it's a good start. I know it has Scottish Gaelic, if that is something that interests anyone.
